On Friday May 20, 2016 at 7:00 PM the message "As Long as Moses Held up His Hands" was given by Minister Christine Lee at Gratia Community Church in Sioux Falls, SD. This message was taken from Exodus 17:8-16 and 1 Samuel 15:2-3.
Another one of the amazing stories form the Old Testament is the time when Israel was in the wilderness and Amalek came to fight them. Moses commanded Joshua to go down in the valley and fight Amalek while he stayed up on top of the hill and prayed and held up his hands. As long as Moses prayed and held up his hands Joshua was winning. But when Moses didn't keep his hands lifted up Joshua was losing. These peculiar ways in which the Lord often works get our attention and teach important lessons that can be more easily remembered.
Christine revealed Amalek was to Israel like a cancer is to the body. Samuel elaborated Amalek liked to attack the weak areas of the people just like a cancer. This is why God commanded King Saul to utterly wipe them out. She noted everything about this story is a type for how sin attacks the believer's weaknesses and like a cancer will destroy him unless totally and surgically removed. The other important lesson Christine brought out of this passage was some are chosen to fight while some are chosen to do the more important thing of pray for the battle.
Moses erected an altar and called it Jehovah-nissi which means the Lord is our banner. The banner is a flag which represents hope as long as is flying. There is hope while people are praying and lifting their hands up to God. This is the only way to beat sin and Satan.
After this everyone present prayed for themselves, for the city, nation and church, and then they prayed for each other. They recognized this prayer as the only hope for all these things to be delivered form sin and be saved.
